Seattle artist, Christopher Martin Hoff, returns to the Linda Hodges Gallery in April for his third solo exhibition. The show will feature new plein air paintings of Seattle and it environs created by Hoff over the last year.
Structures and their many manifestations have long been a preoccupation of Hoff. Influenced at an early age by a love of drafting and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Hoff considered architecture to be a likely career choice; however, a trip to Italy as a teenager where exposure to the work of Tintoretto, among others, inspired Hoff to become an artist.
In his new show, Physical Graffiti, Christopher Martin Hoff's latest series of urban plein air paintings explore how the vernacular language of street signs, corporate logos and graffiti influence our perceptions of the built environment. By manipulating these all-too-common elements of the cityscape and contributing his own invented "tags" on occasion, the artist creates architectural spaces that are familiar but consciously devoid of the people who created them.
